The History of Quiet Storm
Melvin Lindsey (1955–1992)
The "Quiet Storm" format was born in 1976, when a young Howard University intern named Melvin Lindsey was asked to fill a late-night dead-air shift at the university's radio station, WHUR-FM, in Washington, D.C.
Rather than play the typical rotation, Lindsey curated a smooth, soulful mix of romantic R&B and jazz-inflected music, naming the show after Smokey Robinson's 1975 song and album "Quiet Storm." The moody, melodic sound resonated instantly with listeners, and the show became a phenomenon.
Within a few years, stations across the country serving Black adult audiences adopted the same late-night format, giving rise to an entire genre and radio format that still carries the "Quiet Storm" name today. Lindsey's soft-spoken delivery and impeccable music curation set the standard that generations of hosts have followed since.
Melvin Lindsey passed away in 1992 at the age of 36, but his legacy lives on in every station, playlist, and late-night show that carries the Quiet Storm torch — including here on Dr. Luvjoy's Radio Network. We're proud to continue the tradition he started: real music, real soul, and real stories for our community.
Dr. Luvjoy – Keeping the Quiet Storm Alive

Dr. Luvjoy, host of Quiet Storm Radio Network
In 1976, a young broadcaster named Tony Burroughs, now known worldwide as Dr. Luvjoy, stepped behind a microphone at WTGR Radio in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It was there that his lifelong love affair with radio began. Not long afterward, he continued developing his on-air style at WKZQ, where he learned that great radio wasn't just about playing records—it was about creating moments, telling stories, and connecting with listeners one song at a time.
After answering the call to serve his country, Dr. Luvjoy took his passion overseas, becoming a radio personality with the American Forces Radio Network (AFRN). His voice traveled across continents as he entertained and informed military personnel and their families stationed around the world. His international broadcasting journey began in Athens, Greece, and continued through numerous assignments in Europe, the Middle East, and other parts of the world, where he became known for bringing a touch of home to Americans serving far from home.
As technology evolved, so did his career. Dr. Luvjoy successfully transitioned from radio into television broadcasting, producing and hosting a variety of television programs that highlighted music, entertainment, community issues, and inspirational stories. Whether behind the microphone or behind the camera, his mission remained the same: to inform, entertain, and inspire.
Throughout a broadcasting career spanning nearly five decades, Dr. Luvjoy has remained dedicated to preserving one of radio's most beloved formats—The Quiet Storm. Originally known for its smooth blend of soulful R&B, heartfelt ballads, and sophisticated late-night grooves, the Quiet Storm became more than a radio format—it became a feeling. It was music that healed hearts, strengthened relationships, and created memories.
Today, through Dr. Luvjoy's Quiet Storm Radio Network, he continues that tradition 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, introducing a new generation of listeners to the timeless sounds of classic R&B, smooth jazz, soul, and love songs while honoring the legends who built the format. His station reaches listeners around the world through internet radio, proving that great music never goes out of style.
Known for his warm personality, heartfelt relationship advice, signature smooth delivery, and deep appreciation for authentic musicianship, Dr. Luvjoy has become more than a radio personality—he is a storyteller, music historian, producer, guitarist, and trusted friend to listeners everywhere.
For Dr. Luvjoy, radio has never been just about playing songs.
